Post by Chris Sun 16 Nov 2008, 2:12 am

SIgh...now i feel very down...
After gathering, i planned to stay for the night at my parents' place (apartment opposite NZX) coz milo's grooming appointment is 2pm today. Hubby went back to cheras for work 1st. But as usual, i feel very stressed goin back to my own home coz milo will bark at whoever that walks past our house. Even with the door closed, he can hear footsteps n barks too. Then my father sooooooo SCARED neighbours will complain, jaga will come up etc. I listen to his complaints oso feel stressed.
I mean i cant punish milo for barking coz that is his nature. If he doesnt know how to bark at strangers who come near to our house, then he is not functioning as a dog. If he sees strangers outside or in the lift, he wont bark de. But in my parents' home, i have to cover his mouth or hubby will scold him. I see milo looked very confused...he doesnt know what he did wrong..
So just now, after barking LOUDLY twice at my father who opened the house door and 2-3 times at people who walked past the house, father started grumbling that he can hear milo's voice from afar and mum asked me to lock him in his cage. Then i oso dont dare to bathe coz milo if left alone, will cry for me. So hubby asked me to bring a chair for milo to sit in the bathroom while i bathe and he will come from cheras to bring us back...
Very sad la...i wanna spend time with my parents along with milo too but it's so stressful...
When mum saw me taking the chair for milo, she said next time take milo to hospital too when i deliver...then when dad saw me hugging milo, he asked 'no dog odour meh?'

Milo has separation anxiety.. It is too much if he cries even you goes to bath? You gotta let him know you are not leaving him alone, and he need to behave. Else it is very hard the next time you leaving him alone.

And, try asking Milo to "stop" barking instead of "no" barking. When he barks, ask him to stop. So it won't be so noisy, and he shouldn't be confuse when and what to bark at. He is allow to bark, but need to obey to "stop" when asked to. If he stop, praise him, because he did something right, barking strangers and stop on command. This is not easy, but if you manage to train Milo so, it will be a better experience for you in your parents place.

separation anxiety...dunno to laugh or not...cannot believe dogs oso can have such condition...but it can be true...

it's not like he will cry/bark each time i leave him wo...like every morning he knows i need to go to work and he will go inside his cage himself.

but i think he is too clingy on me...need to seriously look into this matter..will try ur method...thanks

Its true about separation anxiety.. They are afraid to be separated with the owners. There are a lots of articles regarding this topic on the internet. One of it that I find it useful is this;

1. The number one cause of separation anxiety is a humans lack of leadership. We humans more often than not, tend to treat our fellow canine family members like humans. In a pack, the leader is allowed to leave, however, the followers never leave the leader. If your dog is instinctually seeing you as their follower and you leave him, it causes so much mental anguish that a dog often takes it out on your house or himself. The dog sees itself as the one who is responsible for the pack and when the pack has left the house they get in a panic because they are afraid that something might happen to their pack members. When a dog accepts you as pack leader separation anxiety will not exist.

thanks yenlu for the site...will bookmark it...Smile

sinv, i oso dunno too much pampering or wat...need to sit down & ponder 1st...coz it's not in every situation he is like that...eg: imagine my kitchen, toilet, bathroom & master bedroom (where milo is in) ...is situated on a same row..
if i'm bathing or in the kitchen, milo wont be noisy...if i go to the toilet, he will bark/whine...i just dont understand y he cant accept me being in the toilet... Rolling Eyes
