Pets are welcome
By SHOBA MANO

A number of food outlets are doing their part to dispel prejudices against animals, especially dogs, by opening their doors to pets.

If you’ve ever felt frustrated at not being able to take your pet out to the malls or restaurants, you’ll be happy to know that there are now food outlets that allow you to dine in with your furry friends.

The following is a list of pet-friendly cafés and restaurants in the Klang Valley:
A patron having beer with his buddy by his side in Sid’s Pub

SID’S PUB
34, Lorong Rahim Kajai 14
Taman Tun Dr Ismail
Kuala Lumpur
Tel: (03) 7727 7437

Those who have lived in London, England and frequented pubs with such names as the Bald Face Stag, Duke Without A Head or The Cock and Bull will be thrilled that they can relive the great British experience in Sid’s Pub.

Its Tudor finish, with heavy wooden beams and walls adorned with horse brasses, and Welsh and English rugby flags, add to the English feel of the pub, which is patronised by many expatriates.

Sid’s Pub is really as English as they come. Its menu serves up everything from Kidney Pie to Sunday Roast Beef. As an English menu is not complete these days without its curries, Lamb Kashmiri and Pork Vindaloo sit just as comfortably on Sid’s menu as do Blue Cheese Mushrooms and English beers.

Sid’s Pub proprietor, Geoffrey Siddle, 40, wanted to create a neighbourhood pub where everyone knew each other.

“When they walk in, they must feel as though they have entered their second home, and that’s why they are free to bring along their dogs.

“In England, a dog is very much a part of the family. I have two of my own which I adopted when I arrived in Malaysia 12 years ago, but they are old now and don’t like being in a packed pub as much as they used to,” he said.

Today, Siddle has achieved his dream. The walls of Sid’s Pub are also adorned with sporting memorabilia contributed by regular customers. There is also a collection of postcards. Siddle cherishes these mementos as they tell him that his patrons feel a sense of belonging.

Highlights: In keeping with his love for animals, Siddle is holding a Christmas gala today, between 3pm and 7pm. Called Remembering the Homeless Animals for Christmas, the event includes a lucky draw and fun activities such as Best Dressed X’mas Pet and Owner Outfit Contest, and an Arm Wrestling Contest.

Raffle tickets are sold at RM50 each, for which customers get to enjoy one free drink and “free flow” of snacks throughout the night.

All proceeds will be donated to homeless dogs at the Furry Friends Farm no-kill animal shelter, and for the upkeep of rescued dogs being temporarily housed by independent pet rescuers before being re-homed.
Mylo has free run of Boathouse Restaurant.

BOATHOUSE RESTAURANT
16, Lorong Rahim Kajai 14
Taman Tun Dr Ismail, Kuala Lumpur
Tel: (03) 7727 4426

You won’t need to ask if Boathouse Restaurant is pet-friendly. You can tell when you are greeted by a cheeky Shi Tzu called Mylo.

Like the rest of the staff at Boathouse, Mylo goes to “work” everyday. The only difference is that she gets to laze about while on duty. Mylo is the mascot at Boathouse Restaurant and is so loved by its owners, Adelyn Lim Chooi Lin and her partner and chef, Law Yen Ni, that she gets a free reign of the place.

“Mylo was an abandoned and abused dog with a very bad skin infection and one eye swollen shut. Nobody wanted her, and she used to cower every time people approached.

“One of my staff rescued her and then we all took turns to care for Mylo. After regular visits to the veterinarian and a period of recuperation, Mylo has grown into the beauty that she is today and even looks forward to meeting new people,” said Lim.

Boathouse serves continental cuisine. Not only are the dishes delicious, the presentation is also spectacular with steaks stylishly set aflame at your table.

Chef Law is famous for coming up with her own concoctions, such as the popular Cempedak Chicken which is the cempedak fruit stuffed with chicken and then dipped in batter and fried.

Highlights: Serves creative continental cuisine. Specials for the day differ every day and are displayed on a chalk board. A two-piece live band will be playing golden oldies from the 70s and 80s for Christmas.

MARKET PLACE RESTAURANT & LOUNGE
4A, Lorong Yap Kwan Seng
Off Jalan Yap Kwan Seng
Kuala Lumpur
Tel: (03) 2166 0750

Market Place Restaurant is a refurbished bungalow along the same road as the Australian embassy in Kuala Lumpur. Its partitioned lounges and rooms are great for privacy, and small groups of people can hang out as if they are in their own pads.

Animal lovers head straight for the beautiful outdoor garden with their dogs without having to enter the restaurant.

“Although we look like a very classy set-up and are frequented by many business executives, we have a heart for raising social conscience. We hold open-mike Doppelganger shows to give creative young people a platform and exposure to the public.

“We believe animals are very much a part of society and extend our invitation to pets to join their families here for a great dining experience,” said Andrew Tan Kok Loon 38, marketing director. “This is our way of giving back to society.”

Highlights: Barbecue, Thursday to Sunday, from 7pm onwards. Doppelganger shows every fourth Sunday of the month with open mike sessions from 9:30pm onwards. Entrance fee is RM20 inclusive of one drink.

The restaurant will be having a special three-in-one Christmas food galore serving buffets, canapés and grilles. Call to find out prices and menus.

PALATE PALETTE RESTAURANT & BAR
21, Jalan Mesui
Off Jalan Nagasari
Kuala Lumpur
Tel: (03) 2141 2148
www.palatepalette.com
su-ann@palatepalatte.com

Located along Jalan Mesui, Off Jalan Nagasari, which is the same stretch that converges into the famous Changkat Bukit Bintang and world-famous Jalan Alor, this restaurant is set apart from the rest because it is on a quaint lane and has the façade of Manhattan’s charming townhouse restaurants.
Families get to enjoy their meals with their pets at the Palate Palette Restaurant & Bar.

It is easy for patrons of Palate Palette to pretend that they are in New York’s Greenwich Village rather than in Kuala Lumpur. Its seclusion is also ideal for city dwellers who take their dogs for a walk around the area to pop in with their pets in tow.

“We have always welcomed dogs here. Even at the launch of our restaurant two years ago, we had a kit that could make name tags for dogs on the spot.

“I’d ask patrons for their dogs’ names and then stamp them onto the tags which they attached to their dogs’ collars,” said Su-Ann Wong, the restaurant’s general manager and co-proprietor.

The food is Western Fusion. Dishes like Lamb Chops with Bean Sauce and Ginger Crème Brûlée live up to the restaurant’s creative name. Wong said a favourite snack that goes well with drinks here is their curry and seaweed popcorn. And it’s even free!

“We add little freebies every now and then so patrons don’t have to spend an arm and a leg for a great dining experience. We even used to give away our very own peanut butter dog biscuits.
Families get to enjoy their meals with their pets at the Palate Palette Restaurant & Bar.

“However, we found that most patrons are fussy about what their pets eat. The biscuits don’t keep too long as they are made fresh, so we stop making them unless we are expecting a large party with pets,” she said.

As part of its efforts to raise social consciousness, the restaurant has a Movie Night one Thursday a month, and screens films that are not usually seen in the mainstream.

“We have previously screened Bruno Manser’s films on the pitiful plight of the Penan tribe in Sarawak. Another time we screened Earthlings, a controversial film narrated by Joaquin Phoenix.

“The movie is about how animals are mistreated in captivity and bred for slaughter. It is a hard movie to watch, and was a difficult decision for my partner and me to screen it, especially since we serve meat here. But we decided that we had to screen this particular movie at least once so that society can learn the truth about the meat industry,” she said.

Wong expressed hope that with enough social pressure, the meat industry will become more humane in the way it farms and slaughters animals for consumption.

Highlights: Happy Hours every day, from noon to 8pm, except on Monday. Admittance is free. Pet Sunday is the last Sunday of the month, when pet owners get together for a barbecue from noon to 6pm.

FOGAL CAFÉ AND DELI
N-1-4, Plaza Damas
60, Jalan Sri Hartamas 1
Sri Hartamas, Kuala Lumpur
Tel: (03) 6201 3206

Located on the first floor of Plaza Damas in Sri Hartamas, this café is easily accessible to pet lovers through an outdoor escalator, without having to go through the shopping mall.

“We have two entrances. One is the entrance to the indoor café and the other opens to a walkway that leads directly to our outdoor patio so that customers with dogs needn’t walk through the restaurant.

“If the place is not busy, they are most welcome to bring the dogs in as well,” said supervisor Junior Ong Ai Leng, 34, an independent animal rescuer for many years.

“My own dog, Princess, was rescued. Fogal’s owner also has a dog which sometimes comes to the café,” said Ong.

Fogal serves authentic Australian meals and has a great selection of Australian wine. Diners may also go over to the deli counter to choose their bacon, ham, beef, lamb or pork, which will then be grilled, barbecued and served with a selection of Australian salads and cheese.

Highlights: Serves party packs for small groups. Customers get to choose their own meat from the deli. Serves a good selection of Australian wine and cheese.

As you can see, not all eateries in Malaysia are closed to pets. If you are an animal-lover looking for a nice dining experience with your pets in tow, try these great places for some bonding with your furkids!
